Warehouse Specialists - organise the handling, storage, packing and movement of goods in and out of the warehouse. To do this job well you'll need to be highly organised and ready to take responsibility.
Professional Drivers - when you're out on the road in charge of up to 38 tonnes of awesome power and a valuable cargo on board, you are literally in the hot seat. You'll need your wits about you and be ready to make decisions every moment of every mile.
Advanced Apprenticeships are designed for young people who have the potential to become the supervisors and managers of tomorrow. That sort of responsibility requires people with initiative, good organisational ability and strong practical skills rooted in sound training. Employers, motivate your workforce
Apprentices tend to be eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. Remember, an apprentice is with you because they want to be - they have made an active choice to learn on the job and a commitment to a specific career.
Earlier research, conducted in February 2008 by Populus on behalf of the LSC to launch the first National Apprenticeship Week revealed:
- 77% of employers believe apprenticeships make them more competitive;
- 76% say that apprenticeships provide higher overall productivity;
- 80% feel that apprenticeships reduce staff turnover;
- 83% of employers rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future;
- Two-thirds of respondents believe that their apprenticeship programme helps them fill vacancies more quickly, whilst
- 88% believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce;
- 59% report that training apprentices is more cost-effective than hiring skilled staff, with 59% believing that apprenticeships lead to lower overall training costs and 53% feeling that they reduce recruitment costs;
- In terms of the return on investment linked to apprenticeships, 41% say that their apprentices make a valuable contribution to the business during their training period, while a further third (33%) report that apprentices add value within their first few weeks (or even from Day One);
- 57% report a high proportion of their apprentices going on to management positions within the company;
- Over three-quarters of respondents expect apprenticeships to play a bigger part in their recruitment policy in the future.
CASE STUDY - SHAUN HAMILTON
Shaun Hamilton's new career is a far cry from the one he started out on when he left school - and he's loving it!
At the age of 24 he's begun a Professional Driving Apprenticeship with Britannia Lanes in Somerset, a family owned removals, storage and shipping company.
It is a job which is taking him all over the country, to places he has never seen.
"It is hard work but I'm travelling a lot and I love working outside. The work is varied and I'm learning a lot about logistics.
"When the Apprenticeship is over I hope to have a Class 2 lorry driving qualification which will stand me in good stead for years to come."
All of that seems a long way from his original chosen career in Information Computer Technology (ICT).
When Shaun left school with nine GCSEs it was the world of computers that led him to undertake a two year ICT course at Bridgwater College.
After that he began a National Diploma course in the same subject the decided it was a career not for him.
A spell managing a surfing shop in Weymouth followed and then after a few months unemployed he came across his new career.
"I started working for Britannia Lanes on a casual basis and I just found that the work really suited me. I found it physically hard to begin with - a bit different to computing - but I really enjoy the variety and the travelling. I just could not face sitting behind a desk now/"
Shaun said the Apprenticeship was giving him a host of new skills in logistics, safe loading and driving.
"There is a great deal involved in the removals businesses - especially when it comes to exporting - but working with my tutor from N-Gaged I am learning fast and enjoying every minute."
